Character Backstories
Elara
Elara is a junior studying film at Temple University. She is taking a documentary filmmaking class and is put into a group with Phoebe, Chloe, and Sophia. Elara is very curious about the world around her and is easily wrapped up in things she finds interesting, no matter how big or small. She is very passionate about the topics that she takes interest in. After her grandmother Ariana’s passing, Elara is devastated, as Ariana was one of her best friends. After she receives a mysterious letter and key from Ariana, Elara takes on the project of a lifetime, creating a documentary film based on the investigation of her grandmother’s journals.
Phoebe
Phoebe is a junior studying film at Temple University. She is taking a documentary filmmaking class and is put into a group with Elara, Chloe, and Sophia. Phoebe is a sweet and quirky city girl, with a kind heart. She has a knack for bringing people together. Growing up, Phoebe’s family struggled with financial insecurity, which taught her empathy. She believes that you should always be kind as you never know what a person might be dealing with at home. Phoebe has been exploring NYC all her life, so she attended Temple to take on a new city and the adventures that come with it.
Chloe
Chloe is a sophomore studying film at Temple University. She is taking a documentary filmmaking class and is put into a group with Elara, Sophia, and Phoebe. Chloe is often described as “too cool for school”. She was the only Asian girl in her high school, and faced merciless taunting by classmates for some of her eastern habits. After being asked out by popular football player only to find out it was a joke, Chloe became withdrawn, masking herself with a undisturbed, “cool girl” persona. Even so, she strove for good grades to get into a college far from her hometown. She decided on Temple, but never shook her high school attitude. Things are looking up when she makes major discoveries and new friends with the other girls in her documentary group.
Sophia
Sophia is a sophomore transfer student studying film at Temple University. She is taking a documentary filmmaking class and is put into a group with Elara, Chloe, and Phoebe. Sophia is a brilliant, diligent student, raised by a strict family to become a doctor. She started college at UPenn on their pre-med track, but soon realized that this career path was the choice of her parents, not her own. Sophia’s personal dream is to become a documentarian with the hopes of showing the world her world- what it means to be Muslim and the beauties and struggles of Islam. Taking a documentary filmmaking class would be the first step.
